Port Harcourt was founded by the British in 1912 on land originally inhabited by the Igbo and Ijaw people. The British named it after Lewis, Viscount Harcourt, Secretary of State for the Colonies (1910–15).
Port-Harcourt is the vibrant capital of Rivers State, an oil rich region of Nigeria and officially tagged 'Treasure base' of the Nigerian nation. It has a population of 3,560,230 (2006) which makes it the fifth largest city in Nigeria.
It is a major industrial centre as it has a large number of multinational firms as well as other industrial concerns. Business related to the petroleum industry is conducted here. Port Harcourt is the chief oil-refining city in Nigeria. There is also a fishing industry and a fish market.
Climate is tropical, humid and nature is green.
Port-Harcourt biggest treasure is undoubtedly its men and women, young and older outgoing and committed entrepreneurs. Port-Harcourt has a majority of Christian, which make the presence of our YWAM Campus so relevant, as we are being called to train and disciple. Our presence here is actually an answer to some Port-Harcourt residents who prayed for years to see YWAM established in the region.
Our students come from all over Nigeria and abroad. We run a DTS every quarter as well as other UofN post-DTS schools. Many of our trainees go back to serve in their churches, further up studies in or outside YWAM, or join the market place.
The main challenges have to do mainly with the poor supply of electrical power and a rampant corruption, both affecting every day's life. We believe that some of it has a spiritual dimension. Concrete efforts are being made at all level to bring justice, morality and true fear of God in private and public life and affairs. We believe God is using our presence and ministry towards this too.
